Zaid bin'Amr RA used to practice the religion of Ibrahim AS (Abraham). The Quraish usedto harass him for his religious beliefs including his brother Khattab bin 'Amr. Zaid bin'Amr RA used to tell people that he was waiting for a Messenger of Allah (God)to come among the descendants of Isma'il AS (Ishmael), but he was murdered fiveyears before Allah (God) chose Muhammad SAW His final Rasul (Messenger). Zaid bin'Amr RA was buried near Mount Hira, where Allah (God) sent His first Wahi(Message from Allah) to Muhammad SAW. 'Umar binKhattab heard his recitation from the outside when he reached their house.
Hewas in a state of confusion, the recitation did have a strange tranquilizingeffect on him, but his anger overcame it. He enteredtheir house and started beating Sa'id bin Zaid RA mercilessly. 'Umar binKhattab also hit his sister Fatimah binti Khattab R, when she tried to save herhusband Sa'id bin Zaid RA. He wanted to force both of them to quit their newlyaccepted religion of Islam, to return to the age-old religion of ignorance thattheir ancestors practiced for so long.
Hismerciless thrashing did not yield any results and both remained steadfast. When'Umar bin Khattab got tired of beating them, better sense prevailed upon himafter seeing them bleeding. A sense of guilt over took him. Then he rememberedthe strange versed he had heard prior to entering their house.
Out ofcuriosity, he asked them to recite the same verses back to him, which he heardwhile entering their house. Sa'id bin Zaid RA and Fatimah binti Khattab RArecited those beautiful verses from the Quran again.
Its 14th Ayah (Verse)resulted in a total change of heart of 'Umar bin Khattab. In his earlycareer, he served as the secretary of Rasulullah SAW and recorded the verses ofthe Quran which were revealed to Rasulullah SAW.
History record that Sa'朝d binZaid RA was a pious man and he never did anything throughout his life againstthe teachings of Rasulullah SAW. It is said that ‘Sa'朝d always covered Muhammadkeeping himself ahead and in front of him in battle and always stood behind himin prayers. He took part in a number of battles, even after the death ofMuhammad, for the sake of Islam, and fought very bravely. Sa’id binZaid RA had served under all four Khalifah' Rashidun (Rightly guidedCaliphs) after the demise of Rasulullah SAW.
During the Khalifah(Tenure of a Caliph) of 'Saidina Umar bin Khattab RA, he commanded the infantrybattalions of the Muslim army during the initial battles in Sham (Syria). Sa'idbin Zaid RA showed exemplary bravery in the battle of Ajnadayn where hecommanded a unit. Sa’id binZaid RA also participated in the battles for Damishaq (Damascus) and Fahl. Hekilled the Roman governor of Hums. Sa’id bin Zaid RA was instrumental in theMuslim victory in the battle of Yarmuk. They alwaysshowed that they were loyal friends of Rasulullah SAW in all phases of theirlives. After thedemised of Rasulullah SAW, Sa’id bin Zaid RA, formed the most important link ofthe caravan of the Islamic service.
Sa’id bin Zaid RA showed great effort inthe selection of the caliphs. Sa’id bin Zaid RA exerted great efforts in orderto prevent disagreement and conflicts. When he placed Saidina Umar RA, who wasthe symbol of justice, in the grave next to Rasulullah SAW, he was sheddingtears. Sa’id binZaid RA had a great role in the Victory of Yarmuk and the Conquest of Damascusduring the caliphate of Saidina Umar RA.Sa’id bin Zaid RA was the commander of a military unit when theyencountered the Byzantine army in the Valley of Yarmuk. The Byzantine armysuddenly attacked the left wing of the Islamic army. It looked as if theByzantine army would defeat them.
Sa’id bin Zaid RA was among the commandersthat preserved their places and persevered. Sa’id bin Zaid RA jumped off hishorse and said.
Sa’id binZaid RA served in the Islamic army of conquest for a long time. Sa’id bin ZaidRA played an important role in making the region of Iraq and Syria become partsof the Islamic land. Then, Sa’id bin Zaid RA travelled around these regions, and taught and trained people. Sa’id bin Zaid RA tried to prevent the gossipsagainst Saidina Uthman RA and Saidina Ali RA. Mughira bin Shuba was thegovernor of Kufah. Once, Mughira was sitting in the biggest mosque of Kufah andpeople had gathered around him.
AllahAlmighty heard the cry of the oppressed and accepted his prayer. The woman whoslandered him became blind after a while. Then, she fell into the well in hergarden while she was wandering around her house. The well became her grave.
On hisdeath-bed, the second Khalifah (Caliph) of Muslims, Saidina Umar bin Khattab RA,nominated a panel of prominent Sahabah (Companions of Rasulullah SAW) to choosehis successor. Because of their close relationship he did not nominate Sa’idbin Zaid RA on it; although he was qualified to be included in that panel.
Sa’id binZaid RA was in Kufah when Saidina Uthman bin Affan RA was martyred. Sa’id binZaid RA was disgusted by the events that followed the Shahadah (Martyrdom) ofSaidina Uthman bin 'Affan RA. Sa’id bin Zaid RA withdrew himself from activelife and did not participate either in the battle of Jamal or Siffin. He spenthis life in prayers living in a quite suburb of Madinah. Sa’id binZaid was offered the office of a Governor on account of his courage andadministrative abilities, but he did not accept it.
Allah, mayHe be glorified, heard the prayer of Zaid RA. When Muhammad the Messenger ofAllah rose up inviting people to Islam, his son Said was in the forefront ofthose who believed in the oneness of God and who affirmed their faith in the Prophethoodof Muhammad. This is not strange for Said grew up in a household whichrepudiated the idolatrous ways of the Quraish and Sa’id bin Zaid RA wasinstructed by a father who spent his life searching for Truth and who died inits pursuit.
Said was not yet twenty when he embraced Islam. His young andsteadfast wife Fatimah, daughter of al-Khattab and sister of Umar RA, alsoaccepted Islam early. Evidently both Said and Fatimah managed to conceal theiracceptance of Islam from the Quraish and especially from Fatimah's family forsome time. She had cause to fear not only her father but her brother Umar whowas brought up to venerate the Kabah and to cherish the unity of the Quraishand their religion.
Umar AlKhattab was a headstrong young man of great determination. Sa’id bin Zaid RA sawIslam as a threat to the Quraish and became most violent and unrestrained inhis attacks on Muslims. Sa’id bin Zaid RA finally decided that the only way toput an end to the trouble was to eliminate the man who was its cause.
Goaded onby blind fury he took up his sword and headed for Rasulullah’s house. On hisway he came face to face with a secret believer in Rasulullah who seeing Umar'sgrim expression asked him where he was going. 'I am going to killMuhammad.' There was no mistaking his bitterness and murderous resolve. The believer sought to dissuade him from his intent but Umar was deaf to anyarguments. He then thought of diverting Umar in order to at least warn theProphet of his intentions. 'OUmar,' he said, 'Why not first go back to the people of your ownhouse and set them to rights?'
'What people of my house?' AskedUmar Al Khattab?
'Your sister Fatimah and your brother-in-law Said binZaid RA. They have both forsaken your religion and are followers of Muhammad inhis religion.' Umar turned and made straight for his sister's house. There he called out to her angrily as he approached.
Khabbab ibn al-Aratt whooften came to recite the Quran to Said bin Zaid RA and Fatimah Al Khattab RA waswith them then. When they heard Umar's voice, Khabbab hid in a corner of thehouse and Fatimah concealed the manuscript. But 'Umar had heard the sound oftheir reading and when he came in, he said to them: 'What is this haynam Sa’id bin Zaid RA ah (gibbering) I heard?'
They triedto assure him that it was only normal conversation that he had heard but heinsisted: 'Hear it I did,' he said, 'and it is possible that youhave both become renegades.' 'Have you not considered whether theTruth is not to be found in your religion?' Said, Said bin Zaid RA to Umartrying to reason with him. Instead, Umar set upon his brother-in-law hittingand kicking him as hard as he could and when Fatimah went to the defense of herhusband, Umar struck her a blow on her face which drew blood. 'OUmar,' said Fatimah, and she was angry.
'What if the Truth is not inyour religion? I bear witness that there is no god but Allah and I bear witnessthat Muhammad is the Messenger of God.' Fatimah'swound was bleeding, and when Umar saw the blood he was sorry for what he haddone. A change came over him and he said to his sister: 'Give me thatscript which you have that I may read it.' Like them Umar could read, butwhen he asked for the script, Fatimah said to him: 'You are impure andonly the pure may touch it.
Go and wash yourself or make ablutions.' Thereupon Umar went and washed himself, and she gave him the page on which waswritten the opening verses of Surah Ta-Ha. He began to read it and when hereached the verse, 'Verily, I alone am God, there no deity but me. So, worshipMe alone, and be constant in Prayer so as to remember Me, 'he said: 'Showme where Muhammad is.' Umar thenmade his way to the house of al-Arqam and declared his acceptance of Islam and RasulullahSAW and all his companions rejoiced. Said bin Zaid RA and his wife Fatimah werethus the immediate cause which led to the conversion of the strong anddetermined Umar and this added substantially to the power and prestige of theemerging faith. Sa’id bin Zaid RA was totally devoted to Rasulullah SAW and theservice of Islam.
Sa’id bin Zaid RA witnessed all the major campaigns andencounters in which the Prophet engaged with the exception of Badr. BeforeBadr, he and Talhah were sent by the Prophet as scouts to Hawra on the Red Seacoast due west of Madinah to bring him news of a Quraish caravan returning fromSyria. When Talhah and Said returned to Madinah the Prophet had already set outfor Badr with the first Muslim army of just over three hundred men.
After thepassing away of Rasulullah SAW, Sa’id bin Zaid RA continued to play a majorrole in the Muslim community. He was one of those whom Abu Bakr consulted onhis succession and his name is often linked with such companions as Uthman, AbuUbaidah RA and Sad ibn Abi Waqqas RA in the campaigns that were waged. Sa’idbin Zaid RA was known for his courage and heroism, a glimpse of which we canget from his account of the Battle of Yarmuk. Sa’id bin Zaid RA said: 'Forthe Battle of Yarmuk, we were twenty four thousand or thereabout. Against us,the Byzantines mobilized one hundred and twenty thousand men.
They advancedtowards us with a heavy and thunderous movement as if mountains were beingmoved. Bishops and priests strode before them bearing crosses and chantinglitanies which were repeated by the soldiers behind them. When the Muslims saw them mobilized thus, they became worried by their vast numbers and something of anxiety and fearentered theft hearts.
Thereupon, Abu Ubaidah RA stood before the Muslims andurged them to fight. 'Worshippers of Allah' he said, 'help Allahand Allah will help you and make your feet firm.' 'Worshippers of Allahbe patient and steadfast for indeed patience and steadfastness (Sabr) is asalvation from unbelief, a means of attaining the pleasure of God and a defenseagainst ignominy and disgrace.' 'Yes'replied Abu Ubaidah RA, 'convey salam to him from me and from the Muslimsand say to him: O Rasulullah, we have found true what our Lord has promisedus.' 'As soon as I heard the man speak and saw him unsheathe hissword and go out to meet the enemy, I threw myself on the ground and crept onall fours and with my spear I felled the first enemy horseman racing towardsus.
Then I fell upon the enemy and Allah removed from my heart all traces offear. The Muslims engaged the advancing Byzantines and continued fighting untilthey were blessed with victory.' Sa’id binZaid RA was ranked by Rasulullah SAW as one of the outstanding members of hisgeneration. He was among ten of the companions whom Rasulullah SAW visited oneday and promised Paradise. These were Abu Bakr, Umar, Uthman, Ali, Abdur-Rahmanibn Awl, Abu Ubaidah RA, Talhah, Az-Zubair RA, Sad of Zuhrah, and Said the sonof Zaid the Hanif. The books of Rasulullah’s sayings have recorded his great praisesof the Promised Ten (al-'Asharatu-l Mubashshirun) and indeed of others whom onother occasions he also gave good tidings of Paradise.
NarratedSa'id ibn Zaid: AbdurRahman ibn al-Akhnas said that when he was in the mosque,a man mentioned Ali (may Allah be pleased with him). So Sa'id ibn Zayd got upand said: I bear witness to the Apostle of Allah SAW that I heard him say: Ten persons will go toparadise: Rasulullah SAW will go toparadise, Abu bakr will go to paradise, Umar will go to paradise, Uthman willgo to paradise, Ali will go to paradise, Talhah will go to paradise: Az-Zubayribn al-Awwam will go to paradise, Sa’d ibn Malik will go to paradise, and AbdurRahman ibn Awf will go to paradise. If I wish, I can mention the tenth. ThePeople asked: Who is he: So he kept silence. The again asked: Who is he: Hereplied: He is Sa'id ibn Zaid. (Abu Dawud Book #40, Hadith # 4632) Recordedin Ibn Majjah as well.
